Google Business Profile - still widely called Google My Business - is the free tool that puts your business on Google Maps and in the local results at the top of search pages. It is one of the most valuable things you can do for your business online, and it costs nothing except about 15 minutes of your time to set up.
This guide walks you through the exact steps to get your Irish business verified and appearing in local searches, plus the optimisation steps that most businesses skip and that make a real difference to how often you show up.
Quick stat: 97% of Irish consumers search online before visiting a local business. Businesses with complete Google profiles get 7 times more clicks than those with missing details.
What is Google Business Profile and why does it matter?
When you search for "plumber near me" or "coffee shop Galway", you will see a box at the top of the results with a map and 3 business listings. This is called the Google Local Pack, and it is the most valuable piece of digital real estate for any Irish local business. It appears above the regular search results and gets clicked more than anything else on the page.
Your Google Business Profile controls how you appear in that box, and also on Google Maps when someone searches for your type of business in your area. A complete, well-optimised profile can drive calls, website visits, and foot traffic - all for free.
Step-by-step: setting up your profile
Go to Google Business Profile and sign in
Go to business.google.com and sign in with a Google account. Use a business Google account if you have one, or create a new Google account specifically for your business rather than using a personal one.
Enter your business name
Type your business name exactly as you want it to appear publicly. Google will check whether a profile already exists for your business. If one does, you can claim it. If not, click "Create a business with this name".
Important: Do not add keywords to your business name (e.g. "Murphy Plumbing - Best Plumber Dublin"). This violates Google's guidelines and can get your profile suspended.
Choose your business category
This is one of the most important decisions in your setup. Your primary category tells Google what searches to show you for. Be specific - "Electrician" is better than "Contractor". You can add secondary categories later.
Some examples for Irish businesses: Plumber, Solicitor, Restaurant, Beauty Salon, Driving School, Physiotherapist, Childminder, Florist.
Choose whether you have a physical location
If customers visit you (a shop, clinic, restaurant), select "Yes" and enter your address including your Eircode. If you go to customers (a plumber, cleaner, mobile dog groomer), select "No" and you will be asked to list the areas you serve instead. Your home address will not be shown publicly.
Add your contact details
Enter your phone number and website URL. If you do not have a website yet, you can skip the website field for now - but getting one should be a priority, as businesses with websites get significantly more profile clicks. See our guide on how much a website costs in Ireland.
Verify your business
Google needs to confirm you actually operate from where you claim. The most common verification options are:
Postcard by post: Google sends a card with a verification code to your business address. Takes 5 to 14 days. Enter the code when it arrives.
Video verification: You record a short video showing your business location, any signage, and proof of operation. Usually processed within a few days.
Phone or email: Available for some businesses. Instant verification via a code sent to your number or inbox.
Your profile will be visible on Google during verification but with limited features until it is fully verified.
Optimising your profile after setup
Most businesses stop after basic setup. The ones that rank in the Local Pack do these extra steps. Each one meaningfully improves how often you appear and how many people click through to you.
Complete every section
Google rewards complete profiles with better visibility. Go through every section in your dashboard and fill it in. This includes your business description (up to 750 characters, write naturally and include your main service and location), your opening hours, your services list, and your products if applicable.
Add photos - and keep adding them
Profiles with photos get 42% more requests for directions and 35% more website clicks than those without. Add at least 5 to 10 photos when you set up: your premises, your team, your work, and your logo. Add new photos every month or two. Google views fresh activity positively.
Get your first reviews
Reviews are one of the biggest factors in Local Pack rankings. Ask your best existing customers directly - a simple text or email with a link to your review page works well. Do not offer incentives for reviews, as this violates Google's policies. Respond to every review you receive, positive or negative. A professional response to a negative review shows potential customers you take your business seriously.
Irish-specific tip: Include your Eircode in your address. Google uses it to precisely verify your location, which helps with local search accuracy, particularly in areas where addresses can be ambiguous.
Use the posts feature
Google Business Profile lets you post updates, offers, and events directly to your listing. These appear in your profile in search results. Posting once a week or fortnight signals to Google that your business is active and engaged, which feeds positively into your ranking.
Add your service areas (for service-area businesses)
If you travel to customers, add every county, town, or area you serve. This tells Google which local searches to show you for. Be accurate - do not list areas you do not actually cover, as this can lead to negative reviews from customers outside your range.
Ensure your details match everywhere
Your business name, address, and phone number must be identical on your Google profile, your website, your Facebook page, and any directories you appear in (Golden Pages, Yelp, local Chamber of Commerce listings). Inconsistencies confuse Google and hurt your local ranking.
How long before you appear in local searches?
After verification, your profile typically becomes fully visible within a few days. Appearing in the top 3 of the Local Pack takes longer and depends on competition in your area, your number of reviews, how complete your profile is, and whether you have a website with supporting SEO.
In less competitive areas and niches, you can appear in the Local Pack within weeks of a complete, verified profile. In competitive markets like Dublin city centre, it takes more sustained effort including reviews, posts, and a well-optimised website working alongside your profile.
Frequently asked questions
Yes, completely free. There is no subscription fee to set up or maintain a Google Business Profile. You manage everything through your Google account.
Postcard verification takes 5 to 14 days to arrive by post. Video verification is usually processed within a few days. If your postcard does not arrive within 14 days, request another from your dashboard.
Not if you are a service-area business. Tradespeople, cleaners, mobile services, and similar businesses can hide their address and list service areas instead. You still need to verify a location, but it will not be shown publicly.
The Local Pack shows the top 3 businesses on a map for local searches. To appear there, you need a fully verified and completed profile, a strong set of positive reviews, a website with local SEO, and consistent business details across the web. Proximity to the searcher also plays a role.
They are the same thing. Google rebranded Google My Business to Google Business Profile in 2021. The platform works the same way.
